Looking for a community wedded not to doctrine but to principles, I joined the Unitarian Church of Harrisburg in 2007.

I came to the Unitarian Church after a long history in Christian churches. Reared in New York, I had 14 years of Catholic education. After college and early marriage, we lived in six states in 10 years. This was Vatican II time in the Catholic Church, and windows and doors were opening to the modern world. When we moved to North Carolina we found the church there to be stiflingly shut. I investigated the Episcopal Church and found a liberal, joyful alternative, and from then we reared our 5 children in this tradition.

Through this time, I wrote poetry and studied at whatever university was at hand. I taught English in high school and, eventually, at Penn State University.

By the time the children were grown my spiritual thinking had broadened to the point where I could no longer stay in a Christian church. I had read too much, traveled too much, studied too much, thought too much. I eventually found the Unitarian tradition, and the seven principles spoke to me.

At this time I am a lay liturgist and coordinate the ushers at Market Street. I have grown deeper into the church and feel at home.
