Membership in UCH has been a blessing in my life for many years.
I was born and raised right here in central PA. I recall turning 13 in the spring of 1979 while Three Mile Island (TMI) was threatening to meltdown. I evacuated from Feaser Junior High in Middletown School District wondering if we would ever get to return. As TMI settled down, we did go back to school, about two weeks later. I went away to college, the whole way to Annville PA at Lebanon Valley College where I was certified to teach biology at the secondary level. Red Land High School employed me nearly thirty years ago and I have coached track a handful of times as well as advised Science Olympiad for the last fifteen years. Along the way, I also earned an RN from Harrisburg Area Community College, which I used in part time positions as a psychiatric nurse and vascular surgeons’s office staff.
Shortly after college I married another Middletown High School graduate. We had two daughters, but later divorced after both girls had graduated high school. Alex and Fallon are true blessings. I was raised in the United Methodist church and raised my daughters in the Church of God. In between those two Christian experiences I briefly attended UCH in my early 20’s. Although I enjoyed this liberal progressive faith, it wasn't a fit for my husband, so we chose to attend a Church of God congregation. As the marriage ended, I returned to UCH in my mid-forties, this time to stay.
Membership in UCH has been a blessing in my life. Singing with UNISINGERS and now the UCH Choir, playing the violin with Jim Handshaw on cello, and chanting along with Libby while ringing the bells or banging the drums all brighten my life. I’ve enjoyed yoga, mindfulness meditation and Auctions at Clover Lane as well as Common Ground Cafe Breakfasts and Getting Ahead program at Market Street. I’ve enjoyed leadership opportunities through organizing the church picnic at Gifford Pinchot State Park two years in a row as well as overseeing meals for the Getting Ahead program at Market Street Campus during the spring and summer of 2016. Both campuses contribute to the richness that is the Unitarian Church of Harrisburg.
My tribe is here, my hope is here, and my refuge is here. One of the greatest blessings in my life is my wife as of October 7, Lois, a fellow UCH member. We recently married at our Market Street Campus with many dear family and friends by our side. I’d like to repay UCH with serving on the search committee as a small way of saying THANK YOU to this community by helping to find our next settled minister.
