I found the spiritual community I had long sought at the Unitarian Church of Harrisburg, signing the membership book, along with my husband Paul, in 2011.
I have been a member of the Unitarian Church of Harrisburg for almost 7 years. Together with my husband, Paul, and our living sons Alex and Jonathan, I am genuinely thankful for the spiritual home and welcoming community we have found at UCH. After being a practicing, albeit skeptical, Catholic from birth, finding a religious tradition that welcomes all, encourages questioning and individual spiritual growth, and engages in a truly open and democratic process to call ministers to serve congregations, has been a genuine blessing. As a physician caring for children with cancer and blood disorders, as well as an educator to medical and physician assistant students, I am well versed in the importance of investing time and energy in processes that shape futures. Serving on the search committee to bring our next settled minister to this special congregation is an investment I am honored to make.
Since joining UCH, I have been involved in numerous activities related to the Religious Explorations program, including serving as an adult guide to age-specific classes, caring for our newest members in the nursery, and serving on the RE task force and the Safe Congregations task force to draft our congregational policy. I have contributed to the Oliver LaGrone art collective to raise money for this annual scholarship program, and I serve as a mentor to the 2016 Oliver LaGrone scholar. Whether attending Sunday services at either of our distinctive campuses, enjoying music at a Friday night coffeehouse, or joining in the fun and games of a congregation picnic or the annual fundraising auction, sharing in the fellowship and beloved community of UCH has enriched my life. I look forward to welcoming a new settled minister to join us in the work of living our Unitarian Universalist principles in our lives, our Harrisburg community, and in the world.
